St. Simons Island has one of the strongest restaurant scenes on the Georgia coast — but the range of atmospheres, from casual seafood shacks to jacket-preferred fine dining rooms, can leave visitors unsure how to dress. And nothing dulls a nice evening out like realizing you're the only person in shorts at a restaurant where everyone else is in a sport coat.
Here's the local's read on how to dress for dinner on St. Simons Island, split by the two categories that actually matter: casual dining and fine dining.
Fine Dining on St. Simons Island
These are the restaurants where reservations are essential, tasting menus and wine pairings appear, and the atmosphere is meant for a special evening. You'll find couples on anniversary dates, families celebrating milestones, and Sea Island guests dressed for a night off the resort.
Restaurants in this category include:
- Halyards Restaurant — chef Dave Snyder's flagship at the Shops at Sea Island; consistently among the island's top-rated
- Delaney's Bistro — over 30 years serving fine regional cuisine on Frederica Road
- Georgia Sea Grill — currently the highest-rated restaurant on the island on TripAdvisor, in the Pier Village on Mallery Street
- Dorothy's Cocktail & Oyster Bar — upscale oyster bar at 12 Market Street, described as "casual elegant"
- Woodside — Chefs David and Ryanne Carrier's intimate French and Italian-inspired room at Midway Square
- ECHO at the King and Prince — coastal cuisine with ocean views
- Coastal Kitchen — locals' favorite for a special-occasion dinner
For Men
None of these restaurants have a strictly enforced jacket-required rule the way Sea Island's Georgian Room does. But a sport coat is very common — you'll see it on most tables at Halyards, Georgia Sea Grill, Delaney's, and Woodside, particularly Friday and Saturday nights.
What works well:
- Sport coat + dress shirt + dress pants + loafers — the safest, most common look. Tie is optional at every one of these restaurants; the majority of tables will be tieless.
- Sport coat + open-collar shirt + smart dark jeans + loafers — perfectly acceptable at any of them, particularly in the off-season
- Dress shirt + smart pants + loafers, no jacket — fine for a weeknight, though you'll be more casually dressed than most other diners
What doesn't work:
- No shorts. Even in summer. Shorts are appropriate for lunch on Mallery Street, not for dinner at any of the restaurants above.
- No flip flops. Boat shoes, driving loafers, dressy sandals — all fine. Rubber flip flops — never.
- No baseball caps at the table.
- No tank tops or athletic wear.

What works well:
- A midi dress or above-knee cocktail dress
- Elegant separates — silk trousers with a nice top, a well-cut jumpsuit, a wrap dress
- Skirt with a blouse and a light layer for the AC
- Heels, wedges, block heels, or elegant flats
What to skip:
- Beach cover-ups
- Athleisure and workout wear
- Very casual sundresses more suited to lunch on the pier

Casual Dining on St. Simons Island
The other side of the island's food scene is genuinely casual: waterfront seafood, taprooms, breakfast spots, pier restaurants, and lunch-oriented places where locals show up in the same thing they wore to the beach.
Casual dining includes:
- Barbara Jean's — Southern comfort food classic on Mallery Street
- Southern Soul BBQ — some of the best BBQ in the Southeast
- Palm Coast Coffee — coffee, breakfast, and lunch in the Village
- Sandcastle Café and Sandbar — Pier Village favorite
- Iguana's Seafood Restaurant — laid-back seafood
- Crabdaddy's Seafood Bar — locals' spot, highly rated
- Mullet Bay — casual seafood in the Village
- Tramici — Italian, sister restaurant to La Plancha
- The Half Shell — oysters and low-country cooking
For men: Polo shirt or nice t-shirt, shorts or khakis, boat shoes, driving loafers, sandals, or clean sneakers. This is where flip flops and shorts are perfectly appropriate — you're on a coastal island.
For women: Sundress, shorts and a blouse, casual dress, resort wear. Sandals, wedges, flats, or dressy sneakers.
The Sea Island Exception
If any dinner during your trip is at a Sea Island resort dining room — Colt & Alison, the Georgian Room, the Cloister Main Dining Room, or the Cloister Lounge — the resort enforces stricter dress codes than any restaurant on St. Simons Island itself.

This is fully separate from the St. Simons Island fine dining scene. If your trip includes a Sea Island reservation and you don't have a jacket, come see us — we'll make sure you're jacketed properly for it.
The Locals' Rule of Thumb
If you're not sure what to wear to a St. Simons dinner:
- Look up the restaurant on Google or OpenTable — the photos on their listing will show you exactly how their guests dress
- Default to "sport coat over an open-collared shirt" for men and "midi dress or elegant separates" for women at any of the fine dining restaurants
- Skip shorts and flip flops at any dinner reservation, even a casual one, after 6 p.m.
- Bring a light layer — coastal AC runs cold, and outdoor decks get breezy after sunset
